Today's Notes: A few flurries in the Western Upper Peninsula yesterday. We should see a few flurries tonight with more the warmest day of the week on Wednesday before this weekened turns into the coldest weekend of this winter season yet. Lake Superior and Great Lakes Ice Coverage (you'll notice I added in ice coverage below) is around what last year was at this time, but even with the cold weather coming it most likely won't get to thick or vast unless we get some extended cold temps. This week Thursday we will see a cold Arctic Air Mass moving in behind this warm weather that may bring us some significant lake effect snowfall starting on Thursday and into Friday morning. Today's Notes: Just a few locations with any snow yesterday to report for today. Not much for snowfall coming for the next few days into early week. Expect warmer temperatures the next few days into mid week next week then cooler weather coming behind that. For late next week it appears things will turn cold and snow returns with more lake effect snow.

Today's Notes: Our first real cold night last night with negative temps, some places saw double digit negative. I have added the Lake Superior Ice Coverage and Great Lakes Ice Coverage data back onto the page now so you are able to see the current ice. This week with the colder nights and days we have seen the ice jump from 2% up to 10%, but don't look for Lake Superior to reach much more than last year (20%).

Today's Notes: Mostly a dusting of snow across much of the Upper Peninsula today, about half of yesterday's snow totals. The last few days is what winter is usually like in the Upper Peninsula from the middle of November through the end of February so really it hasn't been that bad of a year on snowfall for us Yoopers, even trolls could handle the winter we had this year so far. This next week looks to be about normal temperatures with a few flurries through the week but we shouldn't see much more than an inch it looks like on any given day, but that can change quickly with Lake Superior next to us. Lake Superior ice coverage is around 1% which is very low for this time of the year, but that can change quickly as well with some cold Arctic Air. Good thing is we only have till the middle of May then we should probably see the last of the snowflakes. At the Tamarack location snow station our last snow was on May 10th and last 1 inch of snow melted on May 19th.

Today's Notes:
Houghton County (Superior loc) snow station joined the 100 Inch Club today. View Snowfall locations that hit 100 inches.

Another day of lake effect snow, today nice and fluffy which doesn't really add up to much snowfall on the ground by the time the snow crystals break down. Almost all snow locations across the Upper Peninsula are still well under last years snowfall at this point. The last few days have made the snowmobile trails in the Munising area, Copper Country/Keweenaw, and Western UP a lot better than they were a week ago. With the cold weather we are now seeing it should help keep the trails in decent shape for the next couple weeks. There are a lot more snowmobilers up riding now which is great for those businesses who look forward to snowmobilers arriving. Restaurants will be able to open up inside dining to 25% on February 1st so keep that in mind when planning your trip to the Upper Peninsula.

Today's Notes: A good day of snowfall across Southern Houghton county, the Copper Country, Keweenaw, Huron Mountains, and the immediate Marquette area seeing 7-14 inches. Snowfall was all over the place across the rest of the UP with far eastern areas barely getting a dusting of snow, central UP getting a couple inches to 4 inches, far western UP barely 1 inch. If you wanted snow this weekend and into next week it looks like it will continue. Tonight we are supposed to see another 4-10 inches in the Copper Country and Keweenaw, a few areas in Alger may see 2-5 inches with some spotty areas in Luce and Schoolcraft counties seeing up to 5 inches tonight into tomorrow morning. Both Painesdale and Calumet (Tamarack loc) hit 100 inches today. Last year Tamarack location hit 100 inches on Dec 12th and Painesdale hit 100 inches on Dec 14th.

Today's Notes: A day of light snow across most places in the Upper Peninsula today. Only place that really saw about the same amount of snowfall as yesterday and the area that saw the highest 2 days snow totals was the Munising areas and to the east 10-17 inches fell. Tempereatures are dropping to normal mid January levels and it seems we may start seeing more snow into the next few days and into the weekend. The little snow we have gotten the last few days will help the snowmobile trails but they are still needing another 12-20 inches before they get to good and excellent condition.
This year we still don't have any snowfall location that has reached 100 inches, last year at this time we had 23 snowfall locations that already reached 100 inches. Also last year we had 2 stations that reached 200 inches on Jan 18th.

Today's Notes: This year we still don't have any snowfall location that has reached 100 inches, last year at this time we had 23 snowfall locations that already reached 100 inches. Also last year we had 2 stations that reached 200 inches on Jan 18th. Well today we saw some decent snowfall totals across the Western UP, Copper Country, and around Munising, snow was all lake effect snow, light and fluffy. This will certainly help the snowmobile trails but we still need a lot of snow to get them to good to excellent condition. Much of the higher totals (7-10 inches) were from Painesdale to Greenland and around Munising and to the east of Munising. Elsewhere in the UP snow was a trace of snow up to 6 inches of snow. Areas around Marquette, St. Ignace, Gladstone, Escanaba, Iron Mountain saw just little snow. Expect the western UP snowfall to fall off before midnight tonight. The Copper Country from Greenland and into the Keweenaw will continue to see light snowfall (1-4 inches) through the early morning hours and into Wednesday afternoon. Areas around Munising and Newberry should also see some light snowfall (1-3 inches) through the early morning hours. Painesdale took over the #1 position in the snowfall rankings again today.

Today's Notes: Just a little bit of snowfall today again, most areas just another dusting of snowfall. Huron Mountains and north of Ishpeming and Negaunee received the most the last few days, 4-7 inches. Temperatures have dropped a bit now back towards normal January temperatures. The frost line isn't very deep right now and there is barely any ice coverage on Great Lakes is only 1.5% as of today. Lake Superior surface temperature is hovering around 38 degrees right now. We are coming up on our coldest days of the year from the end of January into the middle of February, and historically the greatest ice coverage on Lake Superior happens the last week of February and first few days of March. For those looking to ice fish on Lake Superior it isn't looking good this year as our ice percentage on Lake Superior isn't even 5% yet. Snowmobilers have been asking about conditions, and if you are wondering, the conditions are terrible overall with a few decent patches of snow across the Western UP and in the Copper Country.
Snowfall across much of the Western UP is now about half of what we had last year at this time. There are some places that aren't to far behind last years snowfall less than 40 to 20 inches behind. We still have to the end middle of April that we usally stop seeing those larger snowfalls, can almost guarantee that you get snow in April and a few flurries in May.

Today's Notes: Is this January? Is this winter in the Upper Peninsula? These may be some questions you're asking yourself now that it is the middle of January. There was only a few traces of snowfall up to 3 inches that fell across the U.P. yesterday and early morning today. Don't you fret though, we won't be seeing to many more snowflakes the rest of the weekend, so maybe you can still finish some yard work that you didn't get to in October. Really in some places across the Upper Peninsula you can see grass, lots of grass and dirt. If you still want more snow the good news is, it is only January 16th today and we still have until May 16th (usually see our last snow flurries around this point) that you'll be able to enjoy snowflakes in the air.

Today's Notes: Well the snow storm that never happened, so far we are off to another month of little snow. When October is one of your highest snowfall months in the season that is one for the record books. We still have half of January to go and at least 3 more months of snowfall so it might not hold, but in most locations across the UP there was more snow in October than the month of November and that might be a record. The winter system that the UP was supposed to get stayed to the west of the Upper Peninsula and even then it was pretty weak along the WI/MI border. The system dropped 2-8 inches in central Iowa and straight up the eastern border or Minnesota. A few areas up by Ashland saw 2-6 inches.

Today's Notes: Just a dusting of snow across the UP for measurements today. Temps have been above normal as a result of the warmer North Pacific air flows moving across the lower 48 the last couple months. Things look to get back to normal January weather later this week around Thursday. We should start seeing some snow as early as Thursday and increase Friday and Saturday, maybe even snow into Sunday. Those are into winter activities really want more snow as it is needed to improve the conditions for snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and downhill skiing, good thing is we do have snow so those activities are able to be enjoyed even with little snow we have seen.

Today's Notes: Well the beginning of 2021 is about as snow free as the beginning of Dec 2020. So far this season has been very light on snowfall, but the UP does have snow, enough for some rough snowmobiling and enough for some decent cross country skiing, and down hill skiing. Temps so far this month have been above average, actually most of the last 2 months have been above average and below average on snowfall. There isn't a location in the Upper Peninsula with 100 inches yet, and not even 80 inches as of today, last year we had 9 snow stations with 100-150 inches of snow as of January 5th. The next 7-10days don't look good for snow, but they sure do look good for mild temps. Get out and enjoy what snow we have and the mild temperatures. The middle of the month we should start getting that cold Arctic Air again after the N Pacific jet moves out and allows the cooler air to settle in, Jan and February are our coldest months of the year.
