Today's Notes: Just some light snow scattered across the UP today. Some areas in the Keweenaw and near Munising saw the most. Look for the next few couple days to have a few flurries and then Wed and Thursday should be some nice lake effect snow in the N/NW snowbelts.

Today's Notes: Not much more than an inch in most places across the Upper Peninsula, the lower half of the UP saw a trace to a few tenths, while the upper half of the Upper Peninsula saw just less than an inch overall. Expect some cold weather on Saturday and Sunday with a slight warming up on Monday afternoon into Tuesday. We should see a least a few flurries through the next few days and it looks even into next week.

Today's Notes: Another light snowfall day nothing more than 1.5 inches anywhere across the UP measured this morning. Don't expect anything more than the same the next few days most likely. Cold weather coming our way this weekend, bundle up and make sure your car batteries are charged and you have jumper cables ready to go, you just never know when you'll need them. We now hit 2% ice on Lake Superior and there should be more as we will see those single digits for a couple days.

Today's Notes: Some system snowfall early on through the night with winds changing to the west bringing a bit of lake effect snowfall. Early in the night it was coming down pretty good in the Copper Country but just continued as light snow into the morning hours. Snow continued this morning as snow was being measured and we still should see some snowfall each day through the weekend, most of it being light snow. So far this month we have seen anywhere from 15-20 days of snowfall out of 28 days this month and season totals compared to this time last year are about 30-40% higher. We do have a handful of snow stations that will be joining the 100 Inch Club very soon, within the next 1-7 days most likely. Closest right now is Keweenaw county which has 95 inches of snow so far this season. Painesdale is less than 4 inches behind as of today.
There has been a lot of snowmobilers out on the trails, it isn't surprising as we have decent snowfall now while some other areas in the Midwest are struggling to keep snow on the ground. It is also the busiest time of the year for snowmobiling in the Upper Peninsula which is after Christmas and the first week of January. Snowmobile trails are getting better everyday and those wet spots are starting to freeze a bit, and should really start to freeze up this weekend and into next week as we are going to be seeing some single digit temps, our coldest of this winter so far.

Today's Notes: Some light system snowfall, lake effect snow will move in later tonight and through the next few days before another system will move in around Thursday. We still don't have any station in the Upper Peninsula that has reached 100 inches yet, but there are a handful that are within 10-15 inches. After we get the first station I will add a link to the 100 Inch Club for 2021/22. After that the next level will be the 200 Inch Club, and possibly we may see a few in the 300 Inch Club this year. This week the temperatures will be about normal and then Friday we will see the temperatures drop into the single digits with some possible negative wind chills as well. Look for snowfall updates to be almost daily now through the middle of March, and then our snowfall will start dropping off a bit, but usually we are still measuring snow in late April and even sometimes getting snow in May. Today's Notes: Higher snow amounts were out near Ironwood and down along Lake Michigan this morning. We had some strong SE winds with the system that tracked into the Upper Peninsula. It appears that the rest of the week we should see snow almost everyday with another system moving in behind the lake effect snow. Temps will be taking a nose dive a bit after mid week into the weekend just in time for the next system snow we should see temps in the mid teens and even into the single digits. We should start seeing more and more ice build up on Lake Superior and the water temps should start dropping a bit, right now we are right around 1.4% ice coverage on Lake Superior and about the same overall on the Great Lakes.

Today's Notes: Light fluffy snow continued through the afternoon ending early evening in many locations. This week the temps stayed pretty consistent in the 20s with teens and a few single digits recorded, was just starting to get used to it and now today we saw temps get into the upper 30s and touching the low 40s in some spots. Look for some light flurries the next few couple days. Late Sunday and into early Tuesday we could see another system move in with some decent snowfall which might just bring some snow advisories with it. Stay tuned for more updates this weekend.

Today's Notes: Just a little light lake effect snow, light, fluffy, and easy to shovel, or not shovel if you so chose to. The next few days won't be to exciting on the snowfall front. It will for sure be a white Christmas in most of the Upper Penisula this year. Our snowfall totals aren't that much ahead of last year, less than 10 inches ahead of season totals last year, and last year our snowfall was below average in many areas throughout the Upper Peninsula. We really aren't doing to bad on snowfall for December, we have just gotten spoiled the last 5 years with more than average snowfalls in October and November. Good thing is we should start seeing a longer cold spell coming up early next week and bringing with it plenty of lake effect and system snows. Expect the end of December to have plenty of snow, just in time for your winter recreation activities.

There will be some light snowfall over the next few days and into Christmas but it shouldn't be more than a few inches through the weekend. The next significant snowfall looks to be on its way Monday and Tuesday.

Today's snowfall measurements were pretty much zeros or a trace across most of the eastern UP except north near the Soo which had 6.9 inches of snow. Around Munising had the most snow after the Soo with around 2-3 inches, and the Copper country saw 1-1.5 inches and far western UP saw a trace to no snowfall. However as the morning snow measurements were being taken snow started moving in the winds picked up a bit from the N/NW bringing some light lake effect snowfall that continued through this afternoon and may continue to get some through early evening here on 21st into the early am hours on the 22nd. Don't expect much more overnight though as most of these winds will taper off slightly until Thursday. We will continue to see some light flurries almost everyday this week though. Look for a couple inches across most of the UP on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but snowfall amounts will stay manageable you won't have to put your relatives to work shoveling the driveway from a big snowstorm this weekend. Snowmobile trails are improving and cross country ski trails are as well. Still a bit light with on the ground levels in the far western UP around Ironwood unless your are a bit more north near Bald Mtn or further interior NW of Bergland near White Pine. In the southern UP you can expect to have little to no snowfall in much on the areas near Iron Mtn and Escanaba. Around Marquette things are a bit light unless you are further NW near Big Bay and into the Huron Mtns further, we need more snow. The higher on the ground snow is in the Copper Country/Keweenaw and outside of Munising near Melstrand and north of Seney and just south of Grand Marais. Let's hope we get a real nice snowstorm before the end of the year. Good news is that we are now getting into some colder weather and Lake Superior and Lake Michigan are still pretty warm, so it is prime time for some good lake effect snow before the really cold stuff in February.

Just a light snow across much of the Upper Peninsula yesterday. A few inches is expected to fall on Tuesday, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. This should help with the recreation trails and provide much of the Upper Peninsula a white Christmas. Snowfall amounts for Decemeber are just a little ahead of last year for the entire month of December and we still have another couple weeks of snow to go, don't think we will hit any monthly records but it might just be shy of normal December snow totals. Good news is that we are now getting into some colder weather and Lake Superior and Lake Michigan are still pretty warm, so it is prime time for some good lake effect snow before the really cold stuff in February.

Another day of some very light lake effect snow with the N, NW winds, look for things to change tonight into Monday. From Ironwood up into the Keweenaw and Herman snowfall was 1-5 inches, around Marquette areas saw a half inch up to 2 inches, and eastern UP near Munising and Melstrand around 2 inches was recorded. Far eastern UP didn't see much more than an inch in most areas.
With the little bit of snow we have gotten it has helped the snowmobile trails and xc ski trails, but just enough to cover some of the ice and bare ground in some areas. The areas with the most snow are your best areas to ride or ski right now as they held some of that snowpack after the rains and warm weather last week. Look for a little snow on Tuesday through much of the UP then a larger snow system moving in around Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, right now it doesn't look to affect travel throughout the UP, but stay tuned for updates as we get closer.

Just a trace of snow up to an inch in some areas in the western UP. Temps stayed in the mid 20s and winds were a lot more manageable compared to the 16th. We do need more snow for recreation activities like snowshowing, xc-skiing, sledding, and snowmobiling. The small amounts of lake effect snow we have been seeing the last couple days will cease for a few days as the winds shift to the SE, next chance of minor accumulations is Tuesday. If you are looking for a big storm, don't count on it, but there could be a surprise bit of lake effect Christmas Eve and Christmas day but it shouldn't be a storm, just enough to keep things a white Christmas across the Upper Peninsula.
Snowmobile trails are rideable in some areas but others are in very bad shape, ride at your own risk. Cross country ski trails are a bit slick in areas but overall decent shape especially around Munising and the Keweenaw where the higher snowfalls have been, but we do need more snow.

After some unusually mild 40s and mid 50s the last week temps are back down and some light lake effect snow has moved in. Trending towards cooler back to normal temps for the rest of the month which should mean more lake effect snowfall. Don't expect much snow the next few days, but right around Christmas Day we should see a little more. Snowmobile trails are rideable in some aeas but others are in very bad shape, ride at your own risk. Cross country ski trails are a bit slick in areas but overall decent shape especially around Munising and the Keweenaw where the higher snowfalls have been, but we do need more snow.

Another day of some good snowfall totals down in the southern eastern area of the Upper Peninsula of of Lake Michigan. That area of the UP has seen almost as much snowfall so far this season as they did the entire 2020/21 winter season. Many areas of the UP are now about equal or just ahead of last seasons snow totals at this time compared to last year. With another 3 weeks left this months we should see a bit more snowfall than last year for December and be at about normal snowfall levels across most of the UP. The next good chance of snowfall is late Wed into Thurs morning, but it appears not before some fog with higher dew points on Tuesday and then Wednesday some areas of the UP could see up to a a half-inch of rain before changing to snow on the backside of the low pressure system.
The Top 10 Snowiest locations in the UP, is back, Week 1 has been updated and you can view it. It will be updated each Monday.

I will be adding more snow stations to the snow totals page. I think they will be Ontonagon, Munising 11S (16mi lake), and Redridge, and Covington (finally updating again). Look for their data to be added in the next few days as I get caught up. Keep in mind that some stations don't update regularly each day and sometimes are a day or more behind. Also remember Tahquamenon falls doesn't update but once a month.

Today all through the Upper Peninsula saw some snowfall. Some of the higher snowfall amounts came around Iron River up to Three Lakes and to the eastern UP over to Melstrand area. Also along Lake Michigan from Escanaba to Manistique saw some decent snowfall as well. Today Painesdale took over the #1 snowiest, The Keweenaw has been getting snow every day so it is only fitting that a Keweenaw location starts to catch up to the Central and Eastern areas of the UP. Some light snow again, yesterdays snow was a bit drier and fluffier. Most of the UP saw around 2 inches overall, a few places with more like in the Keweenaw and some locations around the Lake Michigan shoreline in the eastern UP. Snow is slowly adding up and we are now about even across the UP with the seasonal snow totals last year at this time. Snowfall for December should be a bit more than last year, currently we are anywhere from 5-20 inches behind last years snowfall for December so it will be interesting to see if this December is a normal December for snowfall. This coming week though Sunday through Wednesday doesn't look good for snow as temperatures will reach into the low 40s in many areas across the UP, but there some be some light traces of snow and a few tenths of an inch in the overnight hours as temps dip back down into the freezing point. The Top 10 Snowiest locations in the UP, is back, Week 1 has been updated and you can view it. It will be updated each Monday, the first 5 or 6 weeks we usually see a lot of movement in the Top 10 until later on the usual locations start pulling ahead and keeping their positions through the rest of the year. Last year we only saw one snow location reach 200 inches and very few actually see 100 inches unlike the year prior. One thing is for sure we will see snow and most likely see snow into April and May like any normal year in the U.P. of Michigan.

I will be adding more snow stations to the snow totals page. I think they will be Ontonagon, Munising 11S (16mi lake), and Redridge, and Covington (finally updating again). Look for their data to be added in the next few days as I get caught up. Keep in mind that some stations don't update regularly each day and sometimes are a day or more behind. Also remember Tahquamenon falls doesn't update but once a month.

We saw another day of light snow, light and fluffy. Most of the snow was from Greenland into the Keweenaw. A little lake effect was also measured in Munising and the Melstrand area. No significant snowfall anywhere else across the UP today.
Looking into the next couple days Friday looks to be mostly snow free and temps much like today in the upper 20s and hitting 30-33 degrees. Friday night into Saturday we look to see another nice little snow dumping by Munising with 5-10 inches possible. In the Soo most likely 2-4 inches. Along Lake Michigan from Gladstone to Engadine there may be some lake effect snow from 5-9 inches. The western UP from Ironwood to Bergland may see 2-5 inches. In the Copper Country and Keweenaw most likely will see 2-4 inches through Saturday night.
Herman is still holding onto the snowiest place in the UP even without seeing measureable snowfall the last couple days, but a few locations are right behind, so it will be interesting to see how this next snow storm stacks up across the UP going into the Monday TOP 10 Snowiest Report. Today's Notes: You can now leave comments on the page. More lake effect snowfall, real light and fluffy snow. The higher snow totals were in the Keweenaw and the far eastern UP near St. Ignace,Cedarville, and Drummond Island. Today we will continue to see light snow along with tomorrow. Starting Sunday and into the beginning of next week the temps look to get in the upper 30s possibly low 40s with no snow in the forecast past Friday and Saturday. So don't expect the snowmobile trails to hold up if the sun starts coming out, I am sure there will be a handful of snowmobilers coming up this weekend as it is the first weekend of decent snow, but keep in mind there isn't much of a base right now, maybe 3 inches at best. Cross country skiing has started at MTU and Swedetown in the Copper Country, so get out those xc skis and hit the trails. Snowshoes can be used but the snow isn't very deep yet that in most areas, but they might make it a bit easier in some instances in the woods where theres drifting or along some wet swampy areas that haven't frozen yet.
