Snowfall in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

A WINTER WONDERLAND

Hello all, welcome back to another winter season. This is the 7th year of snowfall reports on FunintheUP.com, thanks for following the snowfall page! FunintheUP has quickly become the #1 place for snowfall totals for those interested. Over 1.6 million people viewed our snowfall videos last year from LIVE snowfall reports, to our snowfall videos through our facebook page.
This year will be another fun year of snow, are you ready? Last year the highest snowfall was at the Calumet (Tamarack Loc.) with 331 inches of snowfall for the season. There was a total of 5 snow stations that hit 300 inches last season, they were Calumet (Tamarack Loc) with 331", Painesdale with 314.8", Houghton county with 311.9", Keweenaw County with 304", and Allouez township with 300". This season looks to be no different that last year cold and snow. The snowbelts usually always get their snowfall, but this season we should see an increase in non snowbelt areas with more snow than the last few years have brought to them. One thing is for sure and that is FunintheUP will have your snow updates all winter long, thanks for following.
If you enjoy the videos and the snowfall updates please consider making a donation or become a sponsor to help support this page so I can continue to promote the Upper Peninsula.

Today's Notes:The 1978/79 Houghton county snowfall record of 354.1 inches has been surpassed today at the Tamarack location outside Calumet. There was 4 inches of snowfall measured this morning at 10am bringing the season snow total to 357.2 inches so far. It was still snowing later in the morning and into the afternoon across the UP so tomorrow the snowfall page will be updated with the snow that fell and falls the rest of the day. Also want to note that the NWS Office in Marquette has confirmed that this year is the 10th snowiest at the NWS office. The snow total so far for the NWS office is 227.1 inches. This should be it for snowfall unless another winter system comes through the UP, it appears things will really start getting warm by the weekend which is great news! Houghton county airport recorded 354.1 inches in 1978/79. The most snowfall ever recorded in the Upper Peninsula was 390.4 inches near Delaware in 1978/79.

Snowfall Reports by Steve Jurmu :: April 29th, 2019 :: Comments

Today's Notes:Snowfall across the Copper Country and Keweenaw continued to fall all day with other areas of the UP seeing a trace of snowfall to a few tenths of an inch. As many of you know who follow the snow reports all winter know that there has been a lot of snowfall this year, a little more than normal in many areas across the Upper Peninsula. This year we have 2 snow locations with 300+ inches as of today, they are Keweenaw County with 308 inches and Tamarack location outside Calumet with 353.2 inches of snow. Last season we had 5 snowfall stations to reach 300+ inches. This year could be a record breaking year for Houghton county season snowfall. Tamarack location is only 0.9 inches from tying and 1 inch away from the most recorded snowfall in Houghton County. Houghton county airport recorded 354.1 inches in 1978/79. The most snowfall ever recorded in the Upper Peninsula was 390.4 inches near Delaware in 1978/79.

Snowfall Reports by Steve Jurmu :: April 28th, 2019 :: Comments

Today's Notes: Light snowfall in parts of the Upper Peninsula. The Copper Country and Keweenaw there was measureable snowfall. Other places in the UP saw a trace of snowfall. Tamarack location is now only 3 inches away from tying 1978/89 Houghton county snowfall record of 354.1 inches. As it is still snowing at time of report pretty heavy, there will probably be another 1-2 inches of snow tomorrow. So very close to passing the record it is kinda crazy, but winter we had this year in the Copper Country and Keweenaw for the second straight year it isn't to surprising.

Snowfall Reports by Steve Jurmu :: April 12th, 2019 :: Comments

Today's Notes: Just a little snowfall today across the UP, compared to yesterday. Things should warm up slightly this weekend and into next week. It has been 190 days since we saw our first snowfall to today's snowfall. It isn't unusual at all to see snow this time of the year, it is rather normal for this area of the Midwest. Tamarack location with the 1.5 inches that was measured today is now only 3.7 inches away from tying the 1978/79 snowiest year (354.1") on record for any station located in Houghton county, that was measured at the Houghton county airport.

Snowfall Reports by Steve Jurmu :: April 11th, 2019 :: Comments

Today's Notes: Winter returned for a little bit, not unusual at all for us here in the Upper Peninsula. Tamarack location is now only 5.2 inches away from tying the most snowfall recorded in Houghton county that was in the 1978/79 winter, 5.3 inches and it will be the most. It is safe to say that there will be no location to even come close to the most ever recorded at 390.4 inches recorded near Delaware in the Keweenaw during the winter of 1978/79. Many people including myself would rather have grass and sunshine and 45-50 degree temps this time of the year. Our first measureable snowfall was 189 (6 months of snow) days ago on October 4th, most areas in the Upper Peninsula had measureable snowfall on that day. This probably won't be the last snowfall for the season it appears there is another small storm system being stirred up and on it's way to the Midwest. The good news is that there may be some warmer weather coming on Sunday through Wednesday with temps in the mid 40s possibly low 50s which should be nice. Then later in the week the weather looks to turn winter like again for a brief period.

Snowfall from Jan April 9th 10am to april 10th 10am. This page may be updated multiple times through the day.
Snowfall Reports by Steve Jurmu :: April 9th, 2019 :: Comments

Today's Notes: Light snowfall in some places in the Upper Peninsula. Snow in April isn't uncommon, it is a usual occurance. We almost always see a few inches or at least snowflakes during the month of April and there is almost always snow still left on the ground as well. The month of March left us with snowfall totals that were comparable to last year, slightly higher in some areas. April snowfall is usually minimal at best but can be a month with a few inches up to 40 inches some years. Keep in mind last year on April 15th and 16th a storm dumped 15"-27" of snow in the UP, that was our biggest 2 day snow event the entire winter season. So as you see anything can still happen in April. Take a look back at last years snowfall totals. Ice coverage on Lake Superior is very minimal now with 15% coverage, it should remain about that percentage if not grow slightly with the colder temps the next few days.

Today's High Snowfall: Herman with 2"
Most snowfall, season to date: Calumet (Tamarack Loc.) with 339.1 inches
NOTE: Tamarack location is within 15 inches of tying the 1978/79 most recorded snowfall of any snow station in Houghton county.

Snowfall Reports by Steve Jurmu :: April 2nd, 2019 :: Comments

Today's Notes:Kind of an interesting weather day. We had temps reach the upper 40s and low 50s across the UP. A little sunshine during the day, overcast and mostly cloudy most of the day. Around 5pm we saw some scattered rain showers move across the UP. Temps then dropped quickly to the low 30s and we saw some graupel coming down for about 15 minutes, soon after snowflakes came down and quickly covered trees and roads with a light layer of fresh white snow. Most areas saw around an inch with up to 3 inches reported at Herman. It appears we will only have one (1) snow station this season to reach 300+ inches and that is the Tamarack Location. Keweenaw county station is so very close with 292.5 inches of snowfall, it still could happen, one good snowfall and it reaches 300 inches. Keep in mind last year at this time there were no snow stations with 300 inches yet as of this day last year and we ended up with 5 snow stations with 300+ inches because of the big snowstorm on April 15th and 16th which dumped 15"-27" of snow in the UP, that was our biggest 2 day snow event the entire winter season. So as you see anything can still happen in April. Take a look back at last years snowfall totals.

Today's High Snowfall: Herman with 3"
Most snowfall, season to date: Calumet (Tamarack Loc.) with 337.2 inches
