Hello all, welcome back to another winter season. This is the 7th year of snowfall reports on FunintheUP.com, thanks for following the snowfall page! FunintheUP has quickly become the #1 place for snowfall totals for those interested. Over 1.6 million people viewed our snowfall videos last year from LIVE snowfall reports, to our snowfall videos through our facebook page.
This year will be another fun year of snow, are you ready? Last year the highest snowfall was at the Calumet (Tamarack Loc.) with 331 inches of snowfall for the season. There was a total of 5 snow stations that hit 300 inches last season, they were Calumet (Tamarack Loc) with 331", Painesdale with 314.8", Houghton county with 311.9", Keweenaw County with 304", and Allouez township with 300". This season looks to be no different that last year cold and snow. The snowbelts usually always get their snowfall, but this season we should see an increase in non snowbelt areas with more snow than the last few years have brought to them. Snowfall from Jan Jan 31st 10am to Feb 1st 10am. This page may be updated multiple times through the day.
Grand Marais (Green Haven loc.) joined the 100 Inch Club today with 2 inches of snow bringing their season total to 100" exactly.
From Jan 18th to Feb 1st, the average high temperature at the Houghton county airport was 3 degrees, to say the UP has been cold the last 2 weeks has would be an understatement. Ice on Lake Superior was at 6.3% on Jan 18th and increased to 58.17% by Feb 1st.
Little snow throughout the Upper Peninsula. Snowfall has been steady since Jan 6th, with measureable snowfall across much of the Upper Peninsula. Areas south of Grand Marais and near Newberry, areas out in the western UP, Copper Country, and Keweenaw have seen snow almost daily since Jan 6th, so much so that many stations have caught up to or are close to last years above average snowfall amounts. Things should start warming slighthly for a few days as temps get into the teens and 20s, possibly even into the lower 30s before dropping again into the single digits. Ice on Lake Superior has been forming quickly with the cold frigid temperatures. The ice will steadily increase with temps in the 20s or lower now that the surface temp has dropped sharply. Back to frigid temps again with the wind chills. Snow continued across much of the UP today with your higher numbers out over the eastern UP around Munising, Pardise, Newberry, and from Greenland to Painesdale.

Well yesterday and the day prior were a bit warmer and you could actually feel it. Most if not all public schools, colleges, and non-profit agencies have closed today because of the cold temperatures combined with the wind chills. It is important to dress warm and also to make sure you have some emergency supplies in your vehicle in the winter, it is suprising how many people I see during the winter dress like it is summer and how many I run across who don't carry jumper cables, have a blanket in their car, have a small shovel, or other items that makes it nice if you get stuck or stranded on the roadside. Be Prepared, simple as that.

Well the last week has been filled with snow and cold. It has been our coldest stretch of weather for quite awhile and probably our snowiest 7 days in row this season so far. The first couple weeks in Nov and the last week in Dec were pretty snowy as well. The temps for the last two days have been slightly warmer, but they will be dropping again and the wind chills will be dangerous on exposed skin. The winds will also make driving difficult at times. There has been a winter weather warning in effect and continues for most of the UP through Thursday morning.

Calumet (Tamarack Loc.) is the first snow station to 200 inches. With the 0.9 inches received today it is now at 200.8 inches for the season.
There was light snowfall across the Upper Peninsula today. The higher numbers came out of the central eastern UP around Munising. A trace of snowfall out to the far east and an inch or so throug the western UP around Ironwood.

Calumet (Tamarack Loc.) is 0.1" away from hitting 200 inches for the season. It will be the first station to 200 this season. It probably already received that extra tenth of an inch already today as it was still snowing at the time of the measurement today.
Hancock (Quincy Hill) joined the 100 Inch Club today with 4" bringing that station to 103.4" for the season.
Ironwood #2 joined the 100 Inch Club today with 2.7" bringing that station to 101.1" for the season
Again it was cold, cold has been the word of the week. Last night and early this morning we saw temps across the UP drop into the negative single digits to double digit negative temps. Around 530p last night there was a Lake Effect snow even that made it's way into the UP and dropped some heavy snowfall for about 1.5hrs with snowfall rates of 3-4 inches an hour. Calumet quickly got 5-7 inches from 5pm to 7pm. Painesdale quickly got 3 inches of snow in about an hour. Light snowfall across the rest of the UP. Expect cold to continue through this week.

Well good day to you, hope your winter has been going well for you. Here in the UP we are trying to stay warm lately with below average temperatures. Today again we had snow, not unusual, after all it is winter, but it seems to be picking up now and getting closer to levels we had last year, which was above average in the Copper Country and Keweenaw. NWS office is seeing more snowfall this year than last year along with a handful of other snow stations in the UP. It appears snow will continue through this weekend and might let up early this coming week, but as temps of Lake Superior drop with the cold weather it makes it more prime for kicking in some Lake Effect snow for the UP. Lots of snow now on the snowmobile trails for snowmobiling and those who like riding off trail there is a lot of powder.

Word of the day, COLD. Yes cold will be the word of the day for about a week it seems. Below average temps through the UP as a cold artic air mass lingers throughout the Midwest bringing subzero temps through the day and into the evenings. Things don't look to warm much more than 5 degrees on any one day between now and next Friday. Snowfall was quick yesterday with areas of the western, northern, and eastern UP seeing the higher numbers. It has been snowing pretty good that past 4 days across the UP, what it was like last year, although we are still running behind last year, but we are closer to normals now in much of the Upper Peninsula. This weekend looks to have a little snowfall with a few inches possible tonight into the weekend. Snow should be minimal for the most part, but this cold air mass may just bring us some with Lake Superior still having lots of open water. Temps on the Lake have dropped which brings the temperatures lower to make the temps jive with giving us more Lake Effect snowfall.

Well yesterday we saw some decent snowfall numbers across the western, northern, central, and far eastern UP areas of the Upper Peninsula. We will see more snowfall today and into tomorrow as an artic blast moves into the UP. Primary areas of snowfall will be through the western UP, Copper Country, and into the Keweenaw. Other areas of the UP will see snowall as well but probably not in the numbers that should come out from those areas. Look for temps to start dropping late Thursday night into early Friday morning and remain frigid through the next week. Snowfall will be light through the week as temps stay below normal which will produce snowfall if winds are right, but won't produce the lake effect snow that really can drop snow in a hurry.

Dollar Bay and Ishpeming (Deer Lake loc) joined the 100 Inch Club today, making that 11 snow stations now with 100 inches or more of snowfall. The temperatures have warmed up slightly and just as predicted the snow has come. When the temps get cold like we had snowfall doesn't usually add up like it does when the temps get into the upper teens to 32 degrees because of the moisture content in the air is less and also being where we are with Lake Superior being a driver of a lot of our snowfall. Wind speeds, wind directions, surface air temps, and the temperatures of the lake have an effect on snowfall. Today's and yesterdays snowfall has been light and fluffy not as tightly packed crystals as seen during the past week. Look for the temps to drop starting Friday and lasting almost through next weekend. Snowfall outlook is minimal accumulations through the week, unless we get some warmer air moving in across Lake Superior. Dress Warm!

There was a little snowfall once again in the Northern UP and Central UP today. With a trace of snowfall to a few tenths of an inch elsewhere. Tempslook to rise slightly into the double digits of teens and low 20s through the UP through Thursday with things getting cold again on Friday into next week. Now that the warmer temps will be coming back for a couple days we should see some snow as Northernly winds move in late Tuesday night into Weds.

Snowfall from Jan 19th 10am to Jan 20th 10am. This page may be updated multiple times through the day.
The NWS snow station joined the 100 Inch Club today with 1.4" bringing them to 101.3" for the season. There are a total of 9 snow stations in the UP now with 100-159 inches of snowfall. The highest snowfall amounts 2- 5 inches today were up in Western, Northern UP, and right around Harvey, and also south of Grand Marais. Other areas of the UP there were a few tenths of an inche up to 2 inches of snowfall. Roads got kinda dicey along M28, US45, M26, and US41 in those regions. Roads weren't to slippery but it was the blowing snow and the dusting you get from passing vehicles and vehicles you follow. Ice coverage on Lake Superior is steadily growing, the ice on Keweenaw Bay has moved out to about 1.5 miles now from the head of the Keweenaw Bay between Baraga and L'Anse. Ice however is only thick enough for ice fishing about 1/2mi to 3/4 mile out. Ice thickness is roughly 3-4 inches thick as of yesterday.

Snowfall from Jan 18th 10am to Jan 19th 10am. This page may be updated multiple times through the day.
Again little snowfall today, so far that system they said was moving in hasn't. There wasn't the Lake Effect snowfall they predicted. NWS snow station is 0.1 inch from joining the 100 Inch Club along with 8 other snow stations.There is still a winter weather advisory for the Munising area through Sunday morning, but the snowfall amounts have now been lowered. With such a cold air mass lingering it is going to be tough to get the Lake Effect snow machine rocking. When the temps jump back up into the upper teens and mid 20s with that cold air mass with a nice north to north east winds you'll see more. The way it looks is that more snow will happen around Tues and Weds as the temps look to climb slightly. When we are dealing with Lake Superior, many of you know anything can happen and it can change quickly. Let it snow! Heikki Lunta Winterfest is happening in Negaunee on the 18th and 19th, if you get a chance you should go and enjoy the many activities.

With the cold temperatures again today, little snowfall. Look for this to continue as long as the temps remain in the single digits and low teens. There is not such thing as too cold to snow. Lower temps just means less moisture in the air. When it is colder you will generally find the snowfall is more fine with smaller crystals due to the lack of moisture. Snowfall this year is lacking compared to last year, some might not mind, but the snowmobilers and winter enthusiasts want as much snow as possible to enjoy winter activities. Heikki Lunta Winterfest is happening in Negaunee on the 18th and 19th, if you get a chance you should go and enjoy the many activities.

Little to no snowfall today across the UP. Things were extremely cold last night across some areas of the UP, dropping down into negative temps,-10 in Ironwood, -8 in Marquette, -3 in Iron Mountain, -3 in Escanaba, -2 in Manistique, and 0 degrees in Munising. Temperatures will remain cold throughout the weekend, they will be in the single digits and get back into the teens early next week. We should start really seeing some ice forming this coming week on bays throughout Lake Superior. There were people ice fishing out on Keweenaw Bay today about 2700 feet off of the shore.

Snowfall across much of the UP except the southern UP. Winds really picked up around 6pm across much of the UP. Snowfall this year is really lacking compared to last year at this time across the northern UP in the Copper Country and Keweenaw. Areas in the western, central, and easern UP area about normal for snowfall. When the temps start to get back up into the low 20s we should start seeing some more lake effect snowfall making it's way into the UP. For now the cold temps look to get colder into the weekend and dropping into the single digits for highs, can you say BRRRRRR. It is important to remember to dress in layers, and take it easy outside shoveling, and during your outdoor activities remember cotton kills, wear sythetics or wool clothing and avoid over exherting your body to prevent sweating and cooling to quickly. Also make sure to protect your face with a scarf or facemask to keep cold air from entering your lungs which can cause breathing problems. Drink plenty of fluids to keep moisture in your body, if you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Stay safe out there in the elements.

Light snowfall for much of the late evening and into the early morning hours across the western, northern, and central UP. Winds died down a bit, they were really blowing the snow around the last couple days. Temps should be in the 20s through most of the weekend and look to drop into the teens early next week. Snowfall should continue on an almost daily basis through the western and central UP. Another possible system might move in mid week next week.

Painesdale joined the 100 inch club today hitting 102.5 inches. There are now 6 snow stations with 100 inches or more. Another small storm system made it's way across the UP with some westernly winds bringing most of the snowfall today in the western UP and up into the Keweenaw. Other areas of the UP saw light snowfall. Temps have dropped into the teens and winds have been whipping around blowing snow and at times making driving difficult.

Well Monday was a good day for snowfall across the Upper Peninsula from the Western UP all the way to the Eastern UP. The Keweenaw and Copper Country got their snowfall early Monday morning, then the snowfall started in the early afternoon across the Eastern UP into early evening dropped up to 18 inches in the Eastern UP.

Houghton county and Herman both joined the 100 inch club today, joining, Keweenaw County, Calumet, and Calumet Tamarack Loc. (NOTE: Painesale most likely as well, but they haven't reported numbers yet as of 4:15pm today).
We are running behind snowfall from last year considerably in the Copper Country, for instance, Painesdale last year at this time had 188.1", this year that station has 96.2" The Calumet Tamarack Loc last year had 172.1" and this year so far 135.8". However NWS office is ahead of last year, this year they have 82", last year was 70.7".
Small storm system moved in with a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow through the early morning hours. Snowfall amounts added up quickly across the Copper Country and in areas around Watersmeet to Iron Mountain. Far western UP and the eastern UP only saw 1/2 inch up to 4 inches of snowfall. The system is going to be hanging around today and dropping more snow in the eastern UP today, through the western UP there is drizzle and rain. Tonight we should start seeing more snowfall as things cool down. It is still slippery out there, so drive carefully. Snowmobile trails should start improving once again as the snow continues and the temperatures drop. They really got beat up from Christmas through the New Year.

The day was dreary across the UP yesterday and there was rain and freezing drizzle across the central, southern, and western UP. The eastern UP did see some snowfall from the Soo down to DeTour and to St. Ignace, and a trace of snowfall near the Garden Peninsula. Temps will stay around the low 30s through the day across much of the UP into the weekend with a slight cool down beginning next week, but temps won't be dropping to much. There is possible snowfall across the UP in the evening hours as the sun sets and into the morning hours during early next week. Scattered snow flurries may be seen this week if temps drop into the upper 20s with some cool north winds. Overall there isn't snowfall in the forecast anytime soon. Compared to last year, we are almost running 100 inches behind in snowfall at stations like Painesdale which today last year had 181.7 inches, this year it has 96.2 inches. However the NWS office is ahead of last year (more of avg) 81.7 inches this year compared to 66 inches last year at this time.

A light dusting across the central to western UP. The most snowfall came from the eastern UP around Grand Marais, St. Ignace, and Detour. Temps should be rising the next couple days and snowfall should be at a minimum, with possible snowfall in the evenings as it cools down. Warmup looks to stay through Saturday.

Just a light dusting of snowfall across much of the UP today. Temps really dropped last night, we had single digits in the Northern and central UP and teens through the rest of the UP. There will probably be little snowfall for the next few days, probably will see a little snowfall as temps start getting back up into the 20s. The next 3 days temps will be hovering around the freezing mark and might get above the freezing mark into the mid 30s through Saturday. Next week looks to drop back into the 20s, which should bring us more snowfall.
