Hello all, welcome back to another winter season. This is the 7th year of snowfall reports on FunintheUP.com, thanks for following the snowfall page! FunintheUP has quickly become the #1 place for snowfall totals for those interested. Over 1.6 million people viewed our snowfall videos last year from LIVE snowfall reports, to our snowfall videos through our facebook page.
This year will be another fun year of snow, are you ready? Last year the highest snowfall was at the Calumet (Tamarack Loc.) with 331 inches of snowfall for the season. There was a total of 5 snow stations that hit 300 inches last season, they were Calumet (Tamarack Loc) with 331", Painesdale with 314.8", Houghton county with 311.9", Keweenaw County with 304", and Allouez township with 300". This season looks to be no different that last year cold and snow. The snowbelts usually always get their snowfall, but this season we should see an increase in non snowbelt areas with more snow than the last few years have brought to them. One thing is for sure and that is FunintheUP will have your snow updates all winter long, thanks for following.

Happy New Years Day. Today's snowfall is the last update for 2018. I hope everyone had a great day yesterday and is ready for another year. I have a lot planned for FunintheUP for 2019. This years snowfall is behind last years season total by quite a bit in most locations, especially in the Copper Country and Keweenaw. December snowfall was low compared to the last couple Decembers but there is still a lot of winter ahead for snowmobiling and cross country skiing, downhill skiing, snowshoeing, and other winter activities. Thanks for following the snowfall totals all winter over the last 7 years.
Snow should be light through most of the week it appears with a slight warmup.

Calumet snow station hit 101.4 inches of snowfall today, the second snow station to hit 100 inches this season. There are 3 snow stations within 10 inches of less before they hit 100+ inches. There was a little bit of Lake Effect snow through the northern and western UP. There wasn't much more than a trace of snowfall in the eastern and nothing in the southern UP. Winds are blowing in from the north giving us a little lake effect snow through the rest of the afternoon and evening with a little through the early morning hours. Temps to remain in the teens and low 20s through much of the UP through New Years Day. Stay safe out there tonight as you celebrate the ending of 2018 and the beginning of 2019.

Just a little snowfall across the UP today. Temps dropped a bit into the low single digits. There has been a lot of snowmobilers appearing in the UP the last couple days as it is almost New Years Day, 2019. Snow and trail conditions have improved for most areas of the UP for skiing and snowmobiling. Look for things to be cold through the next couple days with some snowfall on New Years Eve and into New Years Day.

Well there was more snowfall spread across the UP as a whole last night. There were a large number of snowbands moving through from Michigamme to east of Munising that dropped a few inches across the region with up to 5-8 inches in the higher elevations north of US41 north of Ishpeming and Negaunee. The city of Marquette to Harvey saw about 2-4 inches of snowfall as well. The western UP saw a few inches but not as much as expected. The Copper Country and Keweenaw got a couple inches. Southern UP still hasn't seen much snowfall at all this season, when will the biggest snow hit the southern UP, they always get at least one big dump.

The bulk of the storm system hit Calumet up through the Keweenaw today. It dropped 6-12 inches in the northern area of the UP. There were some swift winds seen across most of the UP. After things cooled off last night the temps allowed that north wind to pull the moisture up out of Lake Superior and drop that Lake Effect snow into the Keweenaw. Things should slow down late Friday night into Saturday, there might be a big of snowfall seen out into the Central and Eastern UP as snow bands move in and North winds continue.

Not to much of a storm, just some wet heavy snow. The winds will move more North to NW tonight into Friday which should bring in the Lake Effect snowfall. Temps will be dropping into the mid to low 20s across much of the UP. The western and northern UP will see most of the snowfall especially your higher elevations around Twin Lakes, Painesdale, Calumet and areas in Keweenaw County. Things are slippery out there with the wet snow and will stay slippery because of the rain, along with the temps dropping overnight. Be careful out there on the roads and slow down.

Today Calumet (Tamarack Loc) hit 100 inches of snowfall with the 1.5" recorded. The first station to 100 this season. Last year at this time we had 6 snow stations that hit 100 already. Overall today there wasn't to much snowfall across the UP, only a few tenths of an inch in most places up to 1.5 inches in a few places. There is a storm system that is supposed to move into the area Thursday night possibly earlier. We will probably see some mixed precipitation in the southern UP and eastern UP through much of the night, but as things cool down it should turn to snow. The Copper Country and Keweenaw look to be most affected by heavy wet snowfall with 5-10 inches possible through the higher elevations. If you are out driving the next few days, be careful, go slow, and make sure to give yourself plenty of room to stop and between vehicles, this wet snow is always dangerous.

So it is Christmas 2018, last year at Christmas we had 6 snow stations that were at 100 inches of snow or more, and by Dec 31st we had 13 snow stations that had 100 inches of more. So it was a very snowy December last year. This year so far hasn't been very snowy compared to Dec 2017. There will most likely be scattered snow showers through tonight and tomorrow. There is an increased chance for 1-5 inches across the higher elevations in the western and northern UP. Areas south and east of Munising snowbelts have an increased chance of snowfall as a north to north east winds move in across the UP. Snow conditions for snowmobiling are still poor to fair across the western and eastern UP. In the Copper Country into the Keweenaw the conditions are fair to good. Do the snow dance!

Some light snow across most of the Upper Peninsula on Sunday night. Areas to the east by Moran, St. Ignace, and Cedarville, saw 3-5 inches. In the Central UP there was about 1-2 inches reported through most areas. Out in the western UP from Rockland to Ironwood there was around an inch upwards of two inches in the higher elevations. The higher elevations in Houghton and Keweenaw counties saw upwards of 6 and 7 inches. Snowfall will be light on Christmas day, turning into heavier snowfall across the western UP and northern UP early Thursday morning. Light snowfall again, nothing more than a couple inches. The southern UP went with no snowfall to a trace, eastern UP saw a few tenths of an inch, and the central, northern, and western UP saw a half inch up to 2 inches. Things look to change back to a normal December here today and through Christmas and into the weekend. We should see snowfall across the UP almost daily for the rest of the month. Light snow no more than an inch at any snowfall station in the UP. There were flurries in the Copper Country, a few tenths of an inch to an inch in the western UP and eastern UP. Temps will be staying in the upper teens to mid 20s for most of the week through the new year. There is snowfall in the forecast so we should see an inch to 3 or 4 inches across the snow belts. Light snowfall across most of the UP, no more than a couple inches anywhere. Since Dec 7th, we haven't seen much of any snowfall, very unusual for the month of December being December is usually our snowiest month of the winter. Areas in the Copper Country and Keweenaw are running about 20 inches behind last years season totals, while the NWS Marquette is running about 20 inches over last year, which in turn is about their normal snow totals for at this time of the year. Snowfall from Dec 8th 10am to Dec 9th 10am. This page may be updated multiple times through the day.
A few snowflakes in the western Maquette county and around the Soo. There is a decent base from Calumet up to around Mohawk, and also out near Bergland for snowmobiling. Other areas of the UP are struggling with snowfall. Snowmobile Trail use has been heavy in some areas which has caused some areas to become bare or break open ice that was covering wet spots.

A quick Lake Effect system dropped an impressive amount of snowfall in about 2 hours again in the Keweenaw. You can watch 6.5" of Lake Effect snow falling. Temps were in the teens and low 20s through most of the UP, ice keeps forming on the Portage Canal and Lake Superior keeps getting cooler. It will be interesting to see how much ice forms on Lake Superior this winter. Soon I will be posting the daily ice levels on this page as well.

Notes: Well snowfall has been above average through much of the UP this season, Herman is already at 79.9 inches and Calumet (Tamarack Loc) is at 80.4 as of today. Snowfall is looking a lot like last year up today, as we all know anything can happen, snow could really drop off and warm weather could move in, rain could melt the snow, and there could be grass on Christmas Day. Really it could happen, in 1997 on Christmas Eve we had bare ground, but late into the night we had a few inches that made it a white Christmas. Light Lake Effect snowfall fell late evening into the the early morning dropping a few inches seen at many stations, with the highest in the Keweenaw around Delaware. There should be a bit of Lake Effect snowfall moving in this afternoon and in the evening. Temperatures still remain cold. The Portage Lake is freezing over now, just yesterday there was still lots of open water.

Notes: Today was about the same snowfall amounts as last year today, but our seasonal total is running greater compared to last year. Lake Effect snowfall today, the highest numbers came from the upper elevations in northern Houghton County, the Keweenaw, and in the Huron Mountains. 4-8 inches was seen in a matter of 3 hours from about 5pm to 9pm. Another couple inches fell at those locations for the rest of the evening into the early morning hours. Also the eastern UP saw a bit of Lake Effect around Newberry and the Soo.

Notes: Not much for snowfall today. The Soo had almost 2 inches, a few locations with about a half inch, others with just a trace of snowfall. It appears we might have a small Lake Effect snow system moving in across the Western UP so we should have some snowfall to report tomorrow. Starting today last year in the Copper Country it started a lengthy December of snowfall to give us over 100 inches of snow by mid December. It snowed 27 out of the 28 remaining days of December to end 2017. Then continued to snow into January bringing it to 34 of 35 days of snowfall. It snowed all but 7 days in January and all but 8 days in February.

Notes: After a long day of wind, 8-14 inches of snow, and freezing drizzle in the Ishpeming and Negaunee area they are still moving snow around. Things are looking extremely white and fresh. Dec 4th last year was the beginning of a very snowy December for the Copper Country and Keweenaw, there were multiple places that had 100 inches for December and saw 27 of 28 days of snowfall to end the month. We would go on to see snowfall almost everyday through the middle of February and still had snow on the ground the first week of May. The Top 10 snowfall locations had a little shake up this week, watch the video below.

Notes: Well the first of the month has arrived and after a snowy November 2018 we are moving into December which is typically our snowiest month of the season. If it is anything like that last two years we will see 100+ inches at a few snow stations in the UP. We haven't seen to much lake effect snowfall the last couple weeks but look for that to change. We are ahead of last years snow totals at many snow stations already. Looks like we have a small snow system making its way into the UP across the central areas from Three Lakes to Munising and up into the Huron Mountains.
