Hello all, welcome back to another winter season here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This is the 8th year of snowfall reports on FunintheUP.com, thanks for following the snowfall page! FunintheUP has quickly become the #1 place for snowfall totals for those interested. .
This year will be another fun year of snow, are you ready? We have 10s of 1000s of followers that check in from snowmobilers, weather stations, emergency personnel, city officials, road crews, skiers, snowboarders, groomers, ski resorts, and many more people across the country and world who love to follow the snowfall totals across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Last year Tamarack Loc. with 362.8 inches of snowfall for the season, passing the 1978/79 (Houghton county) record of 354.1 inches. This is the 4th highest snowfall amount recorded in the Upper Peninsula. The highest snowfall ever recorded in the Upper Peninsula was in 1978/79 at the Keweenaw county snow station with 390.4 inches.

Today's Notes: Last day of the month, and another mild day across the Upper Peninsula. Not expecting to much more snow the next few days to start off February 2020, but after a couple mild days things should get back to normal temperatures for this time of the year. Ice coverage on Lake Superior compared to last year is minimal. We still only have two locations with 200+ inches of snow as of today, there are however a couple locations that should reach 200 inches soon.

Today's Notes: Mild day overall, little wind, almost now snow except for a few traces of snowfall with more snow around Paradise and Newberry. We aren't expecting there to be much snowfall the next week, it will be much like it has been the last week. You never know though with Lake Superior and those cold Artic winds, things can change quickly. Monday is your LIVE at 5pm UP Snow Show, Top 10 Snowiest Locations in the Upper Peninsula, remember to tune in. The first month of 2020 is about over and we are now moving into what is usually our coldest month of the year and the days are getting longer, more sunshine and light in our forecast. Ice coverage on Lake Superior is very low this year as of right now, take a look below at the ice coverages for Lake Superior and the Great Lakes. Remember though last year we had extreme cold temperatures. From Jan 18th to March 9th, the temperature in the Copper Country didn't reach 32 degrees, it stayed in the single digits and teens much of that time with a few days reaching mid 20s, that is why Lake Superior ice reached 95% last year on March 8th.

Today's Notes: Covington joined the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. Just a little bit of snow to report today. The last couple days have been pretty mild for this time of the year. Last year we were into a prolonged cold spell, more cold than normal, there was a period where it stayed close to 0 degrees for a week straight and then didn't see a higher temp than 32 degrees for almost 3 weeks. During this period we still continued to see snowfall. The rest of the month we shouldn't see very much snow and it doesn't look like our next significant snowfall won't be coming until around mid next week.

Today's Notes: Not a lot of snowfall to report today, very light across the northern half of the Upper Peninsula and a trace to no snowfall to the southern UP and eastern UP. Watton joined the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. Last year on the 27th we had some very cold temps across the Upper Peninsula with temps in the negative teens with negative 30 degree wind chill readings. This year we are 30 degrees warmer, I will take the warmer temps personally. At the Houghton county airport we didn't see a 32 degree day from Jan 18th to March 9th. It was on March 8th that we saw Lake Superior reach it's highest ice coverage for the season at 95% ice. It was around the 12th of March we started seeing some warmer temps but the snow continued into the months of March, April, and even May last year.

There wasn't to much snow to report for today, a few inches at most in a few places. The snow was drier as the temps dropped slightly from hovering around 32 degrees the last few days. There shouldn't be do much snowfall the rest of the month and temperatures should stay fairly mild the rest of the week for this time of the year. Ice on Lake Superior is running behind last year and with the mild temps we might not see it really freeze up much.

Today's Notes:
Another mild day in the Upper Penisula, I actually don't mind it to much because it has been just hovering from 28-32 degrees for the last few days which doesn't to do much damage to the snowmobile trails and things don't get to messy out on the roads. Snow suprisingly has continued to pile up during this period, the conditions have been perfect for a few inches for the last few days during this warmer period. The last couple days has been beautiful as we have been treated with snowfall hanging onto the branches of the trees and clinging to the evergreens providing a real life Winter Wonderland. Ice on Lake Superior isn't gaining much, this time last year it was really starting to freeze up as it reached 70% by the 2nd week of February and hit a high of 94.91% ice coverage on March 8th. Unless things start to cool down quickly in the next few weeks, don't expect ice coverage to get much more than 40% this season. This means more lake effect snowfall and there could really be some big lake effect dumps coming our way as a result, expect another snowy February.
Paulding was the latest location to join the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. Within the next few days there should be a few more than join the club as they are less than 5 inches from hitting 100 inches. No other locations have joined the 200 Inch Snowfall Club yet but there are a few that will be most likely soon, those stations being Calumet, Painesdale, and Grand Marais (Green Haven loc).

Today's Notes: Decent amount of snowfall measured today. Snowfall was very wet, a little bit drier today however, but still lots of water in it. I noticed many shoveling their roofs off today as we have gotten about 5-10 inches of heavy wet snowfall the last few days and ice has started to build up on roofs. Yesterday the roof of Elks Lodge in Newberry collapsed. If you don't get that heavy stuff off and let the snow continue to pile up you could end up with a disaster. Last year if people remember there were many roofs that collapsed from the snowfall building up. Snow will continue to fall tonight and most of the morning tomorrow, it should let up slightly in the evening. Then Monday and Tuesday we should see some lake effect snowfall, mostly light snow as of weather models show right now.

Today's Notes: A little bit of wet snowfall today across the Upper Peninsula. Temps remain mild for this time of the year, guess we could call this our January thaw. Even with the December thaw and this January thaw we are still ahead of last years season snowfalls to date at many locations in the Upper Peninsula. The snow was almost daily with some big snowfall totals from January 7th through the end of February last year which ended giving many locations 100-150 inches of snowfall for that period. I am sure we will start to pull even here soon within a week or two if we continue to get a trace of snow to a couple inches here and there. During mid winter I really don't like these extended warm temperatures but I guess it is better than the extreme cold temps with high winds that brings those negative wind chill readings. With this warm weather it is keeping Lake Superior with low ice coverage, and with low ice coverage lake effect snowfall will continue to impact us. Keep in mind though last year Lake Superior ice coverage had a high of 95% on March 8th, and today last year ice coverage was 11.66%.

Today's Notes: Basically a snow free day across the Upper Peninsula yesterday. A few locations with a trace of snow with up to a half inch at the NWS office. There will be little snowfall through the end of the month. Hopefully the temps don't get to warm during this period of little snowfall to keep the ski trails and snowmobile trails in good shape. There is a lot of snow on the trails now so that is a good thing, also the temps at night should get below freezing many of the nights to help set them after groomers go through.

There wasn't to much snow today across the UP to report today, a trace to a couple inches of snow. We are still ahead of last years snow totals in many locations across the Upper Peninsula or about even with last years snowfall. There is still a good 2 months of snowfall and not unusual to see snowfall in the middle of May, it is almost a tradition in the UP. Take this next week to catch up on snow shoveling or clearing your driveway to make room for more snowfall while temps rise into the low to mid 30s most of this week. Evening temps should drop below 32 most days. There is a chance for a few flurries through the week, but it should be pretty minimal.

We had our first two locations join the 200 Inch Snowfall Club, Tamarack loctiom and Keweenaw county. There are a few others that should join in the next week to week and a half.

If you were in the Keweenaw you received the biggest snowstorm of this winter season so far. The 2 day total was 26 inches in Keweenaw county and 23.5 inches in Calumet (Tamarack loc). Elsewhere in the Upper Peninsula there was some decent snowfall but nothing like the Keweenaw. Two-day snowfall totals even as close as Houghton were less than half of what they were in Calumet and the Keweenaw. Overall across the Upper Peninsula snowfall is running above a normal year, especially out west, central, east, and to the south. The Copper Country and Keweenaw are seeing slightly higher than normal but not by much. If we get some snow storms like we had to end the month in January last year and snowfall like February last year across the Upper Peninsula, there will most likely be some records somewhere in the Upper Peninsula for seasonal snowfall. We have some locations out east from Munising to Newberry ahead of last year by about 40-50 inches. Copper Country and Keweenaw locations are running 30-45 inches ahead of last year, and areas in the southern UP are running about 20-25 inches ahead of last year. Areas out to the west from Bergland to Ironwood are running about 15-30 ahead of last year. One location joined the 100 Inch Snowfall Club today.

Today's Notes: Three locations joined the 100 Inch Snowfall Club today. There are now a total of 24 locations with at least 100 inches of snow. Today last year there were only 8 locations that had reached 100 inches at this point. As you can see it is a pretty snowy year compared to last year. Last night and early this morning there was a decent amount of snowfall in the Copper Country, Keweenaw, over by Bergland, and in the southern area of the Upper Peninsula near Escanaba and Gladstone. Other areas of the Upper Peninsula only saw a few tenths of an inch to 2-4 inches. Over the course of night it will be interesting to see how the lake effect snow bands set up across the western UP and eastern UP, things look to die off in the Keweenaw tonight with a possible uptick later into the morning. Roads were pretty good today with the backroads not being plowed through late afternoon yet. The snow was pretty light and easy to get through except at intersections where it got sloppy, there were lots of vehicles stuck in these spots that I noticed. Tomorrow I will do a two day snowfall total

Today's Notes: Two locations joined the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. Yesterday there was light snowfall across the Copper Country and Keweenaw and Central UP. Heavier lake effect snowfall bands set up east of Munising over to Newberry and south of Grand Marais and also near Paradise. The real talk is the couple days of snowfall that are ahead. Us Yoopers are pretty much used to the snow, but the winter snow storms always dominate small talk amongst each other, as winter is a big part of our lives, and if you have lived long enough in the UP you know how to deal with it. Much of the Upper Peninsula should see at least 3-5 inches, with some snowbelts in the NW winds zones seeing a possible 10-16 inches. The snow may come in two different waves, one late tonight into the late morning then slow down a bit until about mid afternoon when the next wave of snowfall arrives with lake effect snow. The snow may be heavy at times with blowing snowfall but it shouldn't pile up very quickly but pile up over an extended period of time from late Friday night through early Sunday morning. A prolonged system could really bring more snow than advertised if winds and temps really cooperate. Roads shouldn't be to bad tomorrow as snow should be light and fluffy as temps stay a bit colder early on, but as temps warm up through afternoon on Saturday things could get slippery. With the cold temperatures the last couple days has given us 9.95% ice coverage on Lake Superior now, don't expect that to last long with winds picking up the next couple days.

Today's Notes: Snowfall is still adding up, we are in the midst of January when temps drop and snow picks up. In the Copper Country and Keweenaw there are a few locations now with 160 inches or more. Tamarack loc with 175 inches, Keweenaw county with 167.3 inches, and Painesdale with 163.2 inches of snow. We also have a new addition to the 100 Inch Snowfall Club with a few more very close. There was a little bit of a surprise this morning in the Copper Country, not the snowfall exactly but the amounts were more than was initially antipcated. The NW winds dominated the small southerly system that was supposed to rise further into the Upper Peninsula last night. Temps hovered around 26-28 degrees through the day, and winds were very light with a bit of circulation from calm, SW, and East winds before the NW started dominating, combined with the slight drop in temperatures to about 24-18 degrees this set up the conditions for some unexpected lake effect snowfall from Greenland up into the Keweenaw. The higher amounts were from Twin Lakes to Calumet. Even the lower elevations along the Portage Canal received more than usual due to the amount of moisture present. Western UP received 1-3 inches, the central 1-5 inches, higher elevations around Ishpeming and Big Bay saw about 4-5 inches. East of Marquette all the way to Newberry there was 1-5 inches, some areas just south of Munising saw around 3-6 inches. Tonight expect the snowfall to continue through the night and add up to a few inches by morning. Through the Copper Country and Keweenaw we are expecting another 2-5 inches by morning. The Munising area there is set of lake effect snow bands setting up and impacting the area, snowfall could be in the 4-8 inch range by morning if things continue as they are. Areas outside the Munising to the east will probably see 1-3 inches. The rest of the eastern UP and Southern UP shouldn't see to much snowfall until Saturday when the next system moves in.

Today's Notes: Not much snowfall today, there was just a trace of snow to a few tenths of an inch in some places for the measurements this morning. There will be snowfall now for the next few days a few inches in most areas and up to 6-10 inches in some of NW wind snowbelts as lake effect starts moving in on Thursday and Friday. At this point last year we were into a period where it snowed 48 days of 55 days through the end of February where we saw 100-150 inches of snow during that period. I don't think it will be like that this year, but we will still get some nice snowstorms yet this year in January and February and with a decent amount in March and April we will most likely have a handful of 280-300+ inch snow totals this season.

Today's Notes: A little light snowfall across the Upper Peninsula late last night and early morning today. The next few days into the weekend there will most likely be snowfall every day. Tonight we should see most of the moisture leaving the area as the trough which brought some snowfall to the UP early am hours lifts up over Lake Superior. This should provide us a relatively snow free evening into early Wednesday morning. Wednesday afternoon another trough lifts across the Northern Plains and into the UP bringing more moisture with the possibility of 1-3 inches across areas of the western UP and along the areas of the Wisconsin border. After this system moves through late Wednesday we are expecting a Lake Effect snow event that is still developing from the North. Temps should drop Thursday allowing the moisture to build and the lake effect should move in across the NW snowbelts. As the lake effect snows move across the Upper Peninsula on Thursday high pressure starts to build and move across the Upper Midwest. After Saturday we should see a break in the lake effect snowfall for a little as a Colorado Low moves in across the northeast hitting southern WI and Northern IL. Most of the northern UP may not see much of the colder air from this Colorado low but there could be some lake effect snowfall that develops off Lake Michigan reaching the souther areas of the Upper Peninsula and snowfall amounts could be anywhere from 6-12 inches, but things are still developing with the models.

Today's Notes: Houghton County airport is the latest to join the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. Snowfall is slowly adding up across the Upper Peninsula, there was light snow across most of the Upper Penisula yestereday. There might be a bit of ugly weather tomorrow on Tuesday with snow, mix of rain and freezing rain across much of the Upper Peninsula. The higher elevations might not see the really ugly stuff, we shall see how this develops. Lake Superior ice coverage is now 5% and should be increasing steadily through February. We haven't had to much extreme cold weather yet this year, that is fine by me, I would rather have the snow than the cold. We are still in a cyclic weather pattern of cold and snow for another couple years before we see a trending of slightly warmer winters again. This year I wouldn't be surprised if we have 4-6 snowfall locations that reach 280-300+ inches this season, a few are over halfway there already and it is only the second week of January with a month and a half of good snowfall yet, and March and April could be like last year. Get out there and enjoy the beautiful weather when you can this winter and soak up the sunshine when possible because we will be in for another rough couple months weather wise.

Today's Notes: Herman is the latest location to join the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. We are now 3% of the year through 2020 with another 4 months of winter weather ahead. Last year we the last snowfall the Upper Peninsula had was on May 19th. Will that happen again, not sure, but snow in May isn't unusual, as any old timer or anyone who has lived in the UP more than 10 years. Lake Superior ice coverage reached 5.52% today, yesterday it was 3.42%,so we should see a steady increase daily with the cold temps now the only thing that can stop the ice growing is the wind or more warmups. Remember if you are venturing out onto any ice, no ice is 100% safe ice, always be careful if you are venturing out ice fishing, looking at the ice structures on Lake Superior or Lake Michigan, falling in could result in your death. The next few days we should see continued snowfall, it should be light and fluffy as temps remain on the cooler side. Tuesday looks to bring a little snow through the day with it tapering off by Wednesday. There are now a few locations in the Keweenaw with 150-161 inches of snowfall now. There are 15 locations with over 100 inches of snow, that is a lot for this time of the year, many stations are ahead of last year. Today's Notes: Light snowfall across the Upper Peninsula. Light snow should continue through most of the weekend and into next week. There is a significant storm system that will be impacting areas to the south of the Upper Peninsula around Green Bay and in areas of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. This system might lift slightly arcross some areas of the eastern UP, but it shouldn't bring more than a few inches to the area. Tuesday we may see an additional 3-6 inches possible across much of the UP. Lake Superior ice coverage reached 3% now after a long period of hovering around 1.5%, with the colder weather coming we should start seeing ice increasing along the bays and along the Lake Superior shorelines. Remember no ice is 100% safe ice, always be careful if you are venturing out to look at the ice structure and mounds, falling in could result in a quick and cold death.

Today's Notes: Not a lot of snow a few inches here and there. Temperatures remain cold and winds are still whipping up the light snow that has recently fell. There are now 15 locations that have reached 100 inches of snowfall to date. There are a few that will reach 200 inches probably by the end of the month. Last year we only had about 7 locations that reached 100 inches by this time last year. There will most likely be a few inches of snow through the weekend with things looking to remain cold and continuing to see snow through the week. Snowmobiling conditions are still a bit rough in some areas. Areas in the western UP and into the Keweenaw seem to be doing the best for trail conditions right now. Cross country skiing and snowbiking is real good right now as temps have stayed relatively cold to keep the tracks hard.

Today's Notes: Today Eagle Mine south of Big Bay and Dollar Bay both reached 100 inches and snowfall and joined the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. Light snowfall across almost all the the Upper Peninsula. There was some decent snowfall in the Huron Mountains and Eagle Mine recorded 8.1 inches of snowfall. The next few days we should see some light snowfall with cooler temps and high winds.

Today's Notes: There are 4 snowfal locations that reached 100 inches of snowfall today and joined the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. There will be a few more to reach 100 inches in the next few days. There were some heavy snow squalls on the south east side of the Huron Mountains and in the eastern UP and those are the higher snowfall totals today. In the western UP and through the Copper Country and Keweenaw winds were 35mph plus with gusts up in the 40s. Temps across the Upper Peninsula dropped late evening and remained cold today with a short warming tomorrow. Tonight there may be some freezing rain that might make travel difficult so careful out there while driving across the UP. Quickly comparing the snow totals from last year at this time the northern and western UP are a little bit ahead of last year, the central UP is about equal to last years totals, and the eastern UP is way ahead of last year for snowfall. The southern UP is slightly ahead of their snowfall totals from last season at this point.

Today's Notes:
Not much snowfall yesterday to update, but temps have dropped as cold artic air moves down from Canada and strong NW winds move across the Upper Peninsula today. There will be light to moderate snowfall across much of the Upper Peninsula. Areas from Ironwood up to the Porkies and in the eastern UP east of Munising to Newberry will most likely see the higher snowfall totals tomorrow. Areas north of Houghton up into the Keweenaw may not see much snowfall from this system as there may be some shadowing from this artic air off Isle Royale which will prevent much of the cooler air from reaching the ridges of the Keweenaw that would normally bring heavy snowfall. Winds are pretty strong from Ironwood up to Copper Harbor and over to the far eastern UP around Whitefish point and the Soo with wind chills as low as -25 degrees. Interior portions of the Upper Peninsula may see single digit temperatures tonight with negative wind chills as well. There looks to be a slight warmup coming on Thursday before temperatures drop back down into the 20s with snowfall possible each day.

Today's Notes:
Munising is the latest location to join the ">100 Inch Snowfall ClubA few inches across much of the Upper Peninsula, a slow start to 2020 so far, not expecting that to last to long however. As temps start dropping we should start seeing lake effect snowfall start increasing. Overall we are ahead of normal snowfall amounts for this time of the year at many locations across the Upper Peninsula and we are starting to see some stability in the Top 10 snowfall leaders, there will still be stations that move in an out of the bottom 5 for the next few weeks, but anything can happen. Right now there are another handful of locations that will be reaching 100 inches for the season in the next few days. Tamarack location hit 150 inches today and there are a few stations that are very close to hitting 150 inches, and by the end of the month we should see a few stations reaching that 200 inch mark. Snowmobile trails are still in rough shape in some places with water hazards, much of the tree issues have been taken care of. The best riding with least amount of hazards right now is north of Houghton and Hancock into the Keweenaw. Until we start getting more snowfall and some temps below 20 things will take awhile to really freeze up. Sad to say this weekend we have had a few snowmobiler deaths on the trails, speed is a factor in each one. Take it easy out there and make it home alive, we want you to return next year to visit us in the Upper Peninsula. More snow is on the way this week, most days through the week we should see some snowfall.

Today's Notes:
Happy New Year! Hope 2019 was a good one and 2020 will be even better. Little to no snowfall today across the Upper Peninsula a trace to about an inch in some locations, a pretty slow day on snow after a snowstorm to end 2019. Temperatures should start getting a bit colder now which should help to kick in those lake effect snow storms. So far this season it is acting like last year, but anything can happen in the winters here in the Upper Peninsula. A few stations are almost halfway to 300 inches and we are only into January 2 days. If you don't like winter don't get your hopes up to soon, snow continued into May last year, May 19th in fact was our last snowfall. Ice on Lake Superior has been hovering around 2% for awhile now, expect it to start increasing steadily the next couple weeks and into February, usually about the last to first week of March the ice reaches it's highest percent. Remember that if traversing ice, that NO ICE IS 100% SAFE ICE. There has already been a couple snowmobilers that fell in on the Portage Canal last week, also a truck that went in on Pike Bay in Chassell. I am sure there were others, that was just around the Copper Country. Be safe out there this winter and have fun.
