Hello all, welcome back to another winter season here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This is the 8th year of snowfall reports on FunintheUP.com, thanks for following the snowfall page! FunintheUP has quickly become the #1 place for snowfall totals for those interested. .
This year will be another fun year of snow, are you ready? We have 10s of 1000s of followers that check in from snowmobilers, weather stations, emergency personnel, city officials, road crews, skiers, snowboarders, groomers, ski resorts, and many more people across the country and world who love to follow the snowfall totals across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Last year Tamarack Loc. with 362.8 inches of snowfall for the season, passing the 1978/79 (Houghton county) record of 354.1 inches. This is the 4th highest snowfall amount recorded in the Upper Peninsula. The highest snowfall ever recorded in the Upper Peninsula was in 1978/79 at the Keweenaw county snow station with 390.4 inches.

Today's Notes:
Newberry and Hougton County (Superior location) both joined the 200 Inch Snowfall Club. Another day of light snowfall, much of the UP saw some snow. Winds continued for the most part and a little sunshine was seen. Things are still cold and will remain that way today, but they should start warming up tomorrow and the next few days. There probably won't be to much snow if we do get it the next few days and into the beginning of next week. Things can change through with cool Artic winds coming down from Canada. Lake Superior helps give us some unpredictable snowfalls so anything can happen. This is the time of the year where we can really start seeing some big snowfalls in the 10-20 inch range as things start warming up but winds remain cool from the Artic and blow across Lake Superior. Lake Superior ice is still very low compared to last year and one of the lower perecentages of ice coverage for this time of year for many years. Below you can view current ice coverage report compared to last year at this time.

Today's Notes:
A nice bit of snow across the eastern UP yesterday. Snow totals from 3-8 inches. Other locations saw an inch and up to 3 inhes of snow. Pretty windy as well which helped with the snowfall amounts bringing that cold air off Lake Superior. Areas east of Munising all the way to Newberry saw some nice lake effect snow bands impacting the area.

Last night was very cold again with temps dipping below -15 in some areas last night. Very little snow this morning to measure across the Upper Peninsula. Things look to warm up slightly through the week, along with some snow. Lake Superior is still wide open and that makes it perfect for some late snow storms the next 2 months. Most of the UP should see snow most Monday through Wednesday.

Today's Notes:
Another station joined the 200 Inch Snowfall Club, and that was the Green Haven location just south of Grand Marais. We now have A little snowfall to measure this morning, winds were strong over Lake Superior coming from the North to NW much of the day yesterday and early morning hours bringing some moisture into the air to give us a little lake effect snowfall. The next bit of snowfall we will see should come mid morning on Monday into Wednesday. Our snowfall numbers are now starting to fall behind last years snow totals for the last week now. We aren't really below normal and most places are above normal for this time of the year and will most likely end around normal when all is said and done. There is still a lot of winter yet and as we know snow can pile up quickly the end of February, March, and even through the middle of April.

Today's Notes: After a few cold days and one especially cold day we are back up into the teens and low 20s across the Upper Peninsula today. Yesterday there wasn't but a few places that had a trace of snowfall. So far this morning the stations that have reported there are none with any measureable snowfall besides a trace. Possibly through the day there may be a station or two with a few traces of snow. Compared to last February we are behind on snowfall, if you lived up here last year you certainly remember that month. As many of you know who have lived in the UP much of your life know that this isn't it for snowfall and we still could see a handful of strong snowstorms. Everyone always talks about St Pattys Day storms of the past or snowfall around Mother's Day, yes it does happen fairly often through the years. Get out there and enjoy some winter activities while you can, it is a beautiful time of the year to take in the beauty that surrounds us. Today's Notes: Brrrr...what a cold day yesterday. The coldest of the season so far. Thankfully it looks like warmer weather will be on its way. Saturday should be a nice relief from the cold. With the cold weather we have had the last few days it has brought the ice coverage on Lake Superior up to 17% and the Great Lakes as a whole up to 17% also. It just might have been higher on Lake Superior if we didn't see the high winds yesterday. There are a few events going on this weekend. In Iron Mountain there is ski jumping, in Marquette there is the UP 200 sled dog race, and in Munising there is Michigan Ice Fest. Take this time of the year to enjoy the winter season because sooner or later the snow will be gone, maybe by May 1st? Today's Notes: Today Painesdale became the latest snowfall location to join the 200 Inch Snowfall Club. Watersmeet became the latest to join the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. There are now 4 locations that have reached 200+ inches of snow. A nice cold artic air mass has made its way into the Upper Peninsula and temperatures have dropped considerably since yesterday afternoon. Last night we saw many single digit temperatures across the Upper Peninsula. These are the type of temperatures that we expect this time of the year and so far this season it has been mild up to this point. You can just tell how mild it has been with the lack of ice coverage on Lake Superior up to this point compared to last year and the last 6 or 7 years previous. The winds really picked up yesterday with some gusts along the Keweenaw and off Lake Michigan of up to 45mph. The next few days will remain about normal while Saturday looks to get into the mid 20s and possible low 30s in some spots. Last year on Feb 12th and 13th the Upper Peninsula had a pretty nasty snow storm from Ironwood to the Keweenaw, and over to Negaunee, there was a lot of snow during the two days, dropping 20-40 inches of snowfall. Today's Notes: Not a lot of snow today but a little over night and into the early morning hours. Today Calumet joined the 200 Inch Snowfall Club. Within the next day or two Painesdale should be the 4th location to join the 200 Inch Snowfall Club. Also there should be a few locations to join the 100 Inch Snowfall Club. Expect tomorrow afternoon around 12 or 1pm that winds will pick up again and temperatures will drop with Artic air moving in. There is a possibility for some heavy lake effect snowfall during the afternoon through 6pm Wednesday. Also expect wind chills to possibly hit negative temps as temps will be in the low teens to single digits into Wednesday night and into Thursday. Winds will weaken by Friday with temperatures remaining on the cold side. It isn't until Saturday night when we start to see the tempeatures start getting back up into the mid 20s again. More snowfall it appears on Saturday and again on Monday.

Today's Notes:
A little snow in the southern half of the Upper Peninsula the most was in the very southern tip of the Upper Peninsula. Along the southern part of the eastern UP most areas received some snowfall from 2-5 inches. The central, western, and northern areas of the Upper Peninsula saw a few flurries. Things should remain fairly quiet on the snow side of things until Wednesday night into Thursday when winds will pick up and bring us a little lake effect snowfall. Lake Superior ice coverage and Great Lakes overall ice coverage is down from last year considerably. Lake Superior at this time had an ice coverage of 72% and this year it is 8% ice coverage. There are ice fisherman on Keweenaw Bay off Baraga and L'Anse, not sure how thick the ice is so use caution and remember no ice is 100% safe ice.

Today's Notes: Doesn't look like there was any snow to report for today. Yesterday was pretty mild overall, a little bit of sunshine again for a brief time. Temps were hovering around mid teens to low teens across the Upper Peninsula. Tonight and into Monday there will be a little storm system making its way across the very southern area of the UP, with some possible snowfall, very light across the southern half of the UP from Ironwood, Marquette, Munising, to Newberry. Further south closer to Menominee there could be 6-8 inches. Over along US2 from Escanaba to St Ignace there could be some lake effect snow off Lake Michigan with 2-6 inches. Lake Superior still very low on ice coverage compared to last year, don't expect it to get much over 40% this year, still a good 3 weeks of cold weather before it really starts to warm. It is however nice to see more daylight in the evenings, myself I would rather have more light in July, August, and September for hiking and kayaking, especially when we see snow flying from October to May. We really have to take advantage of our nice weather here in the Upper Peninsula. Overall the Upper Peninsula is one beautiful place to live with 4 distinct seasons of the year, even if winter blends in with spring and fall. Today's Notes: More snowfall today continuing off where yesterday left off. Higher numbers were in the higher elevations of Negaunee to south of Big Bay. Sunday into Monday there will be a system moving east that will mostly impact the southern tip of the Upper Peninsula. Straight across from Ironwood over to Newberry might see a little bit of snowfall on the outer edges of the system with 1-3 inches possible if it remains to the southern half of the UP. Other areas of the UP may see a trace to half an inch. Last year today, the Copper Country and Keweenaw had a quick snow storm that dumped 10-15 inches of snowfall. The month of February was very snowy across most of the Upper Peninsula, it will be tough to keep up with last years February snowfall totals. Most likely we will start falling behind last years snow totals, some places have already started falling behind or pulling even with last seasons snow totals. Don't worry though if you enjoy snow, the UP will still see a few more good snow storms before April is over.

Today's Notes: Light snowfall across most of the northern half of the Upper Peninsula. Higher amounts around Big Bay and north of Houghton and into the Keweenaw. Lake Superior ice is still low compared to last year when we were under an extreme cold spell, today last year Lake Superior reached 50% ice coverage. The next few days we will most likely see a few flurries here and there, but nothing to significant.

After a few days of mild weather across much of the Upper Peninsula we should start to see a little bit colder weather moving in, not a lot colder but a tad colder. On Tuesday and Wednesday we should see a little bit of snowfall in the NW snowbelts. Overall there shouldn't be to much snowfall for the next week or so. Last year if you recall we were in a very cold spell that lasted about a month and a half and it seemed to not stop snowing during that period. The month of February was very memorable for many especially if you just moved to the UP or you were a student at college last year. Lake Superior ice coverage is still very low and will probably stay that way, the ice levels at this point would start really creeping up each day at this point in the season, hitting 30-40% ice this year on the big lake seems a far cry, which means lake effect snow. I would expect at least a decent snowfall in February, March, and April. Snow can still add up quickly as you know, so take these days of milder weather to get that roof cleared off and your driveways cleared up a bit.

Today's Notes: A little bit of wet snowfall early morning. The last week we haven't see to much snowfall and more mild weather than usual. Last year as we all remember middle January to the end of February was very snowy and extremely cold. Being that Lake Superior is wide open we will probably see a few big lake effect snow dumps in February, March, and April, and possibly a few inches in May as it often does.
