First good winter storm for 2020-21

Well folks did winter just arrive? It seems that way in many ways, that months of December and January were well below normal. When we saw over 20 inches hit us in October many were wondering if we were going to see another harsh winter. Well that wasn’t the case, with the two snowiest months December and January left us with less than half of what either month would normally be any given year.

Well welcome February 4th, 5th, and 6th, our first good few days of snow, wind, and cold, a typical 3 day period of an Upper Peninsula winter.

If you didn’t you can watch the LIVE videos on the FunintheUP facebook page from the past couple days to get an idea of what conditions were like in the Copper Country and make sure to always check on the snow amounts on funintheup.com

Today I was out filming the blowing snow and snowmobilers and it was crazy out there when the winds picked up and blew the snow around, drifts grew across roadways and caused temporary whiteouts across the roadways creating some hazardous conditions. There were many snowmobilers out enjoying the fresh powder today which I am sure many have been waiting for all season. While filming the blowing snow across a roadway today I got to watch a group of snowmobilers on Trail 17 near Swedetown get a stuck snowmobile out of the marsh off the trail. You can watch the LIVE video I did here. Usually by the middle of January you can count on good snow through the end of February to beginning of March. Check out more snow photos from the last couple days below.

Thanks for reading today’s blog entry, I will try to keep this blog going and growing. Looking forward to your comments and contributions.

Thanksgiving (storm) snowfall

Well friends, it is towards the end of November which means it is just that much closer to the end of the year for 2019. The first 2 weeks of the month were filled with snow, almost every day for 14 days there was measureable snowfall. Over to the eastern UP south of Grand Marais to Newberry to Paradise have been the snowiest areas in the Upper Peninsula so far at this point. Grand Marais has the most snowfall so far this year with 54 inches and Paradise comes in 2nd with 51 inches of snow so far. Other areas of the Copper Country and Keweenaw are about normal snowfall amounts for the month of November. Calumet (Tamarack loc) has 35.9 inches so far, and Painesdale has 32.9 inches this season. Areas around Marquette to Michigamme are slightly lower than normal for this time of the year. The NWS Marquette office has 11.5 inches this year so far and last year at this time they had recorded 39.1 inches already.

Our next snowfall system (not sure if I would call it a storm yet) looks to be coming in around Tuesday night and really be making an impact on Wednesday, leaving many on Thanksgiving having to do some shoveling to get out of the driveway on Friday. If you are planning to make a trip in the Midwest I would ensure you have emergency gear ready in your vehicles and be ready for the worst, being stuck in the cold weather with heavy snowfall is not the most ideal situation you wanna find yourself in.

Remember to check funintheup.com out each day for the snowfall totals and other information all winter long, winter in the Upper Peninsula usually lasts till April and last snowfall is usually the middle of May. Each week on Monday at 5pm you can watch LIVE at 5pm TOP 10 Snowiest Locations. See ya then eh!

Be safe out there — Yooper Steve

Added a Blog for FunintheUP.com

Welcome friends far and wide. Finally added a blog to the website. This will be a great opportunity for you all to get a little bit more insight in to things in the Upper Peninsula. I am not much of a writer but it should be fun to add some writings to the adventures. I do not have any exact plans on what will be written about but I am excited to add another dimension to FunintheUP. One thing is for certain it will be fun.
